IC 1396 is an open cluster embedded into a large emission nebula. It is located in the constellation Cepheus at a distance of about 3000 light-years from Earth.
The brighter concentration of interstellar gas and dust, just above its center, is also known as the Elephant's Trunk Nebula which is believed to be a very young site of star formation. |
